Wichita resident Greg Alexander founded Second Chance Services in January 2025 to employ people experiencing homelessness to repair and renovate rental properties, KAKE reports. Alexander said most of his employees live in a shelter or were recently housed by the city.

“I decided that let’s try something different,” Alexander told the station. “We’ll go in and do all the painting, cleaning, and various miscellaneous handyman stuff.”

Since launching, the company has repaired at least 26 homes and fully remodeled two, Alexander said. It averages about four employees, and current workers help recommend others who need a job. “Not every homeless person...is ready to make that change,” he said. “So we look for the people that are ready to go to work.”

His biggest obstacle, he said, is that he is the only driver, and some job sites can’t be reached by bus; he hopes to partner with a car dealership or organization to help workers get vehicles.
